You should also consider the use of topo software rather than just buying maps. For example, I have a package from Topo.com (link below) that is of Death Valley that costs about $50. An even better value, however, is their state series; for $100 you can buy a package that has, literally, every topo map for the State of California. There are at least 3 big advantages to this approach: 1) you can print off a map that covers just the area that you're interested in using a scale that is right for you 2) you can get very precise GPS coordinates from the software, which is a big help if you are in confusing terrain (which is much of DV) or are traveling at night, and 3) with this particular package you can trace a route electronically on the computer screen and it will tell you exactly how many miles and how much elevation gain and loss you will incur over the route (this is particularly useful for backpacking).

I highly recommend their product; it's saved my butt lots of times (in conjunction with a GPS).
