As far as I know they don't have a post hole digger at Death Valley. So if they were going to install a large 2 or 3 legged sign they would have to dig a trench like this. I helped put up a sign for the sand dunes near Stovepipe and we dug a trench with a back hoe like this. I'll check with one of the equipment operators there and see what he knows.
