not very many places is 4-wheel drive actually essential. I've been over hundreds of miles of jeep trails in this park and where you really want to have 4 wheels with traction is on trails like Lippincott; steep rocky terrain where you've got to take it slow and you don't want to lose traction. There are several canyons that come to mind where it's either climbing boulders or steep trails with loose or sharp rocks. That's where having low range on the tranny is also important; you want to creep very slowly or a shredded tire or broken suspension will be the result.
