According to George Pipkin's book on Pete (ch. XIV), Pete did have a pet bear for a couple of years. He "rescued" it as a cub after killing its mother (in self defense, he said) in the Sierras, in 1908. Apparently Walter Scott killed the bear in 1910, when it got loose and wondered off. It's said that Scotty wasn't welcome on Harrisburg Flat for a long time after that. In a quick check of my books on Scotty, I found no mention of the incident (not surprising), though I might hove missed it.
