Harold, I'll address the second part of your question first. The ET rate happens real time. The plant, bush, crop or tree will attempt to draw additional water from the ground or stream flow immediately. If the call for the plant to transpire is too extreme it will show it by wilting or dehydrating. This is usually temporary, as after a brief rest bit the plant will quickly rehydrate. So the uptake or demand for water from the plant will right away, or in extreme cases peak demand may lag a few hours.
