Anyone who knows me knows I live by Toyota 4x4's.

The wife drives a 98 4runner and I have two 85 pickups and a 88 4Runner.

My main thrasher has been rolled but kept running and I was even able to drive it from the Kern River back to San Diego with a blown head gasket.

Since I'm big on being prepared I carry A spare water pump. alternator and rebuilt kits for anything hydraulic. Plus the normal tools, fluids, and belts and hoses.

One nice thing is that my three 80's 4x4's all have identical engines and drive lines. This makes managing spares and swapping parts a lot easier.

If you're looking for a new vehicle, I would go for the TRD Tacoma or maybe a Jeep Rubicon.

The only spares I would worry to much about having are Tires.

Most break downs I see in the outback are do to the roads. Things such as tire blowouts, busted shocks, loose steering and suspension parts and issues related to engine and transmission mounts vibrating loose.

Every morning before leaving camp go over your rig and make sure every things good and tight. Including lug nuts.

Happy Trails
