I think it's a matter of debate whether the Cranston/Feinstein bill
has done any good. Taking land away from the BLM and giving it to the
NPS is probably good, but the mere fact of designating Death Valley a
"Park" has only brought more people. When I read the story of the
German tourist who died in Golden Canyon two years ago (the story of
"Ingrid and Gerhard") I thought, "Would this have happened if it were
still a Monument?". I think there is an element of people coming to
Death Valley just because it's a park, the same way they go to
Yosemite.
