Can't comment on any sort of desert Atlantis stories, but there are lots of ghost towns. Most aren't as well preserved as what you appear to be seeking. On the western side of the park, at the base of the Panamint Mountains, is Ballarat. It's also worth a look, and there are some good places to camp near there. It's also jumping off point for MANY other mining camps/ghost towns. Most of them don't seem to have what you're looking for, though.

Try Rhyolite, just over the Nevada border east of the park near the town of Beatty. It's beautiful and fascinating. For a more ginned-up, "touristy" version, try Calico. It's worthwhile.

If you're inclined to head north after visiting, the town of Bodie is worth a detour. It's just great.

I've only listed towns you can drive to easily in a conventional auto. There are other, more remote sites. Most of them take some more serious commitment to reach, and you get to find them yourself! That's part of the fun.
