The first 3 or 4 miles south of the pavement (Zabriskie Point Road) is rocky and rough, the rest of the road is hard-packed sand and okay for your pickup. I have seen rental cars on the road. Seven miles south of the pavement look for the low pass to the east. This hike will take you into the middle of the Greenwater Canyon.
