For a first timer, I would recommend staying at Stovepipe Wells (I like it better than Furnace Creek Rand and it's cheaper).
If you only have a day or two, do the southern 'tourist' route. If you have more time, do that first and then go north to Ubehebe and Racetrack (if your vehicle can handle it - most can if you have reasonable driving competence).
Save the wilder stuff for a second trip - there's a lot out there, but hit the common highlights on the first trip out.
