I was surprised to learn that 800,000 people visit Badwater every year. I didn't know it was that many. I don't see the proposal as some sort of "Disney-fication" of Death Valley. The onslaught of that many people has to be dealt with or they will eventually trash the area. Unfortunately, many of our National Parks are in danger of being loved to death. The alternative is a quota system in which you enter a lottery to get a permit to visit an area. This system is used now for Mt. Whitney.
By the way, my wife and I were in DV last weekend. We hiked Little Bridge Canyon and had it to ourselves. We love Death Valley!
