Crossing the Valley of Death!!

I was wondering.....has anyone out there ever heard of someone successfully double crossing Death Valley at Badwater in the heat of the summer? I have heard it is about 5 miles across the valley at Badwater so a double cross would be about 10 miles of hiking in extreme heat.
