What that decision says, from society's standpoint, is "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime." That's all. A young woman wasted her life by traveling a path society said, and continues to say, is wrong.
It's funny that every generation or so young people have to re-learn these basic facts. There is a reason we have laws, and there's a reason people from all over the world are coming to the USA because of these laws and the freedom they protect.
I'm sure a vigilante group would have done the Barker Ranch group much worse than the prison sentances.
