I understand fire restrictions and yes the desert can burn in areas where there is vegetation. However with Death Valley being one of the hottest and driest places in the world, it shouldn't make any difference one year to the next whether they allow fires or not. I do understand how the national park system works, and if they decide that all natiional parks have restrictions, then that's the way it goes, I guess.
Meantime, in response to Leroy and cooking on campfires - what about marshamallows? What about hot dogs? What about wrapping your potatoes in foil and throwing on the campfire? Some how the thought of roasting a marhsmallow or hot dog on a camping stove, just doesn't have the same appeal! And when the evenings are cold, there's nothing like sitting around the campfire to keep warm - not that this is much of an issue in DV this time of year, of course.
