Campfires are an integral part of wilderness experiences. I have many fond memories of my young sons asking all sorts of questions about life while on camping trips, around the campfire at night. Restrictions on campfires, to me, are meant to raise everyone's awareness and to protect the environment.

Much like speed limits are meant to provide safety in traffic. How many exceed the limit on a regular basis without mishap? It gets down to getting "caught." If the fire gets out of control, everyone loses. If you add your ashes to an existing firepit, what's the problem?

Having a campfire is really not a matter of civil disobedience. To be fair, the Park Service sets regulations that we can either like or dislike, obey or ignore. Just be sure that when you want the fire out, it's really out.
