dune buggies & cabins

hi! i have a couple questions; hope you guys can help me out.

a friend loaned me a dune buggy for an upcoming desert trip. anything i should know about its capabilities/limitations before setting off? can i take it on rough roads?

i very much want to stay in a cabin. however, i'll be by myself, and i wanted to let someone know where i would be in case of emergency. are there any cabins accessible by open roads, or are they all "officially" closed? (e.g., in one book i have the author says not to enter the geologist's cabin!)

lastly, where can i get topo maps of the area on short notice? and any good book recommendations?
