Smoke in Owens ValleyPosted by Goody2shz on August 05, 2002 at 14:38:36:
I was in the Whites this weekend and as promised here is the smoke report: Friday driving through Owens Valley it was hazy but not anything unusual. Up in the Whites it was clear and the sky was blue. Saturday by late afternoon the Sierras were totally obscured. The breeze was coming from the west and we could smell the smoke at 8,500' but it was not bad enough to affect breathing or our eyes. Sunday morning the air was crystal clear again & we could see the Sierras perfectly. Driving south through Owens Valley late Sunday afternoon, it was hazy north of Lone Pine but not too bad. Between Lone Pine and Little Lake the smoke got really, really bad. The Sierras, now so close, were almost completely obscured, and the sky was so dim I think the temperature actually came down about 10 degrees. Past Little Lake, the air was clean and clear again. My best explanation for the wild fluctations in smoke conditions is that the wind has a lot to do with it.
