I have both, an onboard air compressor (ARB) and a CO2 tank. The CO2 tank is good to have, BUT if you are doing much 4Xing, spend $200 and get a good compressor. In the long run you won't save any $$ with a $150 CO2 tank.
I air down to 18-20 lbs anytime I'll be on a dirt road for more than an hour. It will save your rig on the washboard roads, and yourself. :-) Air down more and deep soft sand almost disappears.

Most 4X CO2 tanks have hi-flow regulators, which are more costly. I picked my regulator up at a welding supply house, I'm not sure of the CFM, but its 10 times the CFM of a 12v compressor.
If you only need an air source sometimes, I have seen good results with the $50 Truck Air, its no Quick Air 3, but at $250 less, a reasonable tool to carry.
