Take the TJ! Nice Jeep.......

I don't think there's much difference whether you go North/South or South/North. The "steps" are really rather tame. Is the Tacoma a "full size" truck. It's going to be a tight squeeze if it is. Short wheel base helps alot here, but with due care, you should be able to make it. the ZJ should be fine. It's been a while since any significant rains, so the roads are in pretty good shape. If possible take more than one vehicle since that route is quite remote and infrequently traveled if you should break down. I've never had luck with my cell phone through there.

As far as doing the route you described in one day, it is certainly doable but you'll need to keep moving. Not much time to play. I'd probably take my time getting to Eureka Dunes hang out and explore the area and drive back over Steele Pass. Then you'll have playtime. The days are getting shorter. And you can decide for yourself which way is easier, N/S or S/N.

don't forget, water/food/shelter, just in case.

And above all enjoy!
