I like heading north on that route, as the steps are somewhat easier going down. But a friend likes to call my 4Runner a "girlie truck," so your vehicle may make the direction of travel a moot point. Long wheel-base vehicles will take some careful driving. There's at least one "kissing rock" with scrape marks on it about a half mile south of the pass. I also talked to the driver of a big, jacked-up pickup who had to turn around because he couldn't negotiate the turn around the boulder. And Dedeckera Cyn does have one step with a turn, just for fun! One point in favor of heading from the Dunes to Saline: the stairs are at the far north end of the route, so if you come from the south and cannot make it down the stairs, you've got a long drive back the way you came. For an awesome view, head east from the pass, up the hill as far as you can go. And never mind that pesky orange sign. I think it's a fraud that some backpacker stuck there to close the side road. I'm still working on my web site, so I've emailed you another pic of one of the stairs.
