Late October should be a good time for your trip to Panamint City. Going overland from a base station is a good way to go. My old bones don't hold up to backpacking anymore, so I've gone on to 4-wheelin'. I know I miss some things while driving, but then I get around a bit more than by foot. My big backpack expedition was from Tuolumne Meadows to Lake Tahoe, late summer of '73, the year I got out of the Army.
