Unless you are coming from central or northern Nevada, I would suggest that approaching Death Valley from the south via Hwy 127 out of Baker (at the Hwy 127/I15 junction) and entering the valley via 190 at Death Valley Junction offers the route with the least twists, turns, and grades by a fair margin. I've even seen suggestions that folks approaching from Ownes Valley with large RVs should consider travelling south to the 15 and in via Baker/DV Junction rather than trying to tow over Townes Pass.
