You can appologise to me, the RiverRat. I ment to imply, we went sailing along on the bottom of Panamint Valley. If we had sailed up Towne Pass, I'm sure it would have made the newspapers. I am also sure, though, the tailwind helped getting up the pass (all the crap tied on top also acted like a sail), and we wouldn't have made it to the top without saving the fuel in Panamint Valley. Knowing the car, and by all indications, there wasn't anything but fumes in the tank by the top.

It impressed the hell out of the two boys. Maybe, when it comes time to choose my nursing home, they will remember gems like this.

This was also the trip when Keith, then 6 years old, came into his own hiking. We were hiking through another blow, on the Z Point-G Wash-Golden Canyon-Z Point loop, he was holding onto my finger for balance during the blow on the trail around Manley Beacon (I wasn't dragging him), and he was telling me about all the gold you could find in the borax mines. For quite a long time.

Now he and I lead the family Death Marches, and I haven't been able to shut him up since. Can't even outhike him anymore.
