No, the news article and photo are not related.
The above photo captures the remains of an individual whose name escapes me at the moment (Thomas F...?). He was a Skidoo miner who perished near the bottom of the valley.
The photo and story is found in WESTERN PLACES-SKIDOO! by Alan Patera and myself. I don't have a copy of the book handy at the moment and so cannot give more details.
