I agree with Art - for a first visit, do the tourist trails.
I would recommend doing the Southern tourist loop, Titus Canyon, Scotty's Castle, Ubehebe Crater, Racetrack, Eureka Dunes. Then maybe Telescope Peak and the Charcoal Kilns?
There is plenty to see on the main tourist track for a first visit.
