You can order USGS maps online, at various scales. You can also check out the California Geological Survey (formerly the CDMG--name change due to our politically correct Governor)
www.consrv.ca.gov Type in topo maps in the search.
Also consider CD-based topos. www.maptech.com sells the entire State of 7.5 minute quads for $100. Problem with these is you really need a large plotter or a laptop to carry with you.
Integrated with GPS, etc, oh yeah!
