We have been taking the kids to Death Valley every year since they were in diapers!
Now they are 9, 12, and 15 and still love Death Valley. They love hiking the narrow canyons, exploring the old ghost towns and mining camps, and the spots with water like hiking up Happy Canyon, or hiking up to the upper Darwin falls, to discovering the warm water flowing in Warm Springs Canyon, theres just something about teh desert, water, and kids.
We just spent another Thanksgiving in DV and PV,and did a 10 mile hike in DV, the kids had a blast exploring. In DV we based at Texas Springs, for some reason the kids love that spot, they like to hike the hills at night.
As for books on DV, there are quite a few out already, none are focused on families though.
I have spoken with the author of a book that is currently in the works and will be covering the Inyos, Saline Valley, Argus Mountains, and the Panamints in detail. This book is due out this spring and will cover just about every little hidden spot from Bever!@#@ to the &!@#$ Spur.
