Another thing to remember is to carry water and stay with your vehicle if you get lost. A few years ago, a group of German tourists went out to Butte Valley and never returned. In the middle of summer, it is best not to stray too far from well-traveled roads. The park service has a lot of good ideas on their website for safe travel. Please heed their warnings, and come back alive! Mines can be safer than the great outdoors.
PS - The Lost Burro Mine and Lippencott Mine are both out around the Racetrack and are cool mines to visit. Last time I was there Lippencott was fenced, but Lost Burro....
