I would follow Trona Davids advice and go with the u-save in Bishop. They have off road stompers that have a few dents and are built to travel off road. A regular rental agency will stock the Pavement Princess wrangler with a 4 cylinder and crappy road tires. Goler will make a punk out of a lousy vehicle with low clearance. 4 years back I met a group of campers in rental jeeps at Warm springs camp. They set off for the Butte, knowing that they were violating the terms of their rental agreement by leaving a county maintained road... the company had the last laugh.. their forward driveshafts were removed and the differential studs were polished flat..preventing a shadetree mechanic from fixing it to thrash.
