As far as I can tell, to camp, one must be 2 miles from "developed road" If you look at the Death Valley Nat. Park sites, (the first few that come up on Yahoo) there are maps of where camping is and is not allowed. Most of the lower valley seems to be off limits this time of year. I have been told that camping in the Saline Valley is ok anywhere you can find a place as well as Eureka Dunes. Are you wanting to camp backcountry or at a regular site? That will also influence where you can go. From the info I have gathered so far, it seems that to backcountry camp, the nether regions of the park are your only option unless you go outside park boundaries. One bit of reality that has hit me, as I want to backcountry camp, is that 2 miles from the car rule. It means a bit more prep than I anticipated in terms of shelter. I usually just tie off a tarp to my Jeep for shade, now I have to build something.
