I've run a 96 Grand Cherokee with no problems while a buddy of mine swears by the Toyota Forunner. My Cherokee has a larger fuel tank and gets a little better mpg (6 cylinder) so I have extended range over his rig. I'm of the opinion that anything with a transfer case and skilled driver can tackle just 98% of the Death Valley trails. I ran a bone stock 4 cylinder Isuzu Trooper for years and never had to turn around once. Hope this helps.
