The road to hell is 135 miles longPosted by Scootertrash on July 19, 2003 at 12:44:08:
Death valley folks please keep an eye out for runners on U.S 190 July 22-24. The Badwater ultra marathon is the most demanding race on the planet earth. Runners will depart from the badwater sign, and finish the race at the Whitney Portal. This non stop race attracts folks from around the world as there is no ultra event more difficult. Runners will do the first 42 miles with no first aid stations in 120 degree heat.As the weather cools to the 107 range, they are greeted by a 5400 foot climb up Townes pass. After a plunge down to Panamint jerrys, they begin another brutal climb of 15 miles to the Darwin turn off. At this point, most of the runners who are still moving get to see the sun rise again. Last year, Pam Reed from the USA won the event with a time of 27:56:47. Runners who finish within 48 hours and are still alive get a belt buckle for their efforts.
