Race Track is definitely worth the ride if you have an appreciation for such oddities in nature. The easiest way to get there is the long, somewhat rough road from Ubehebe Crater, headed west. You don't need 4 wheel drive; lots of people take passenger cars, I'm sure, but it make shake your molars up a bit and loosen some nuts and other things on the car. It's damn hot in the desert right now; even at that higher elevation. Better to wait for late September or October.
