If the Instaweather (AWS) instrument at Furnace Creek is 10-15 feet above ground then that might explain why the maximum readings there are lower than the Morning Report readings for Furnace Creek (recorded at 4 feet above ground). E.g. on the 12th July, 124.2F vs. 128F as in your example.
However, on many occasions the difference is in fact the other way round. E.g. on the 16th July, 127.6F was recorded by Instaweater, whereas only 124F was recorded according to the Morning Report (and 125F per Las Vegas Weather Service site!!). I can't explain this one.
Any thoughts?
PS: July 1913 recorded the highest temperatures seen in DV so far: 134F on the 10th, 130F on the 12th and 131F on the 13th. Since then, as far as I know, only 129F (on a few occasions) or below has been recorded. I would be interested to see the 1917 figures, as it seems strange to me that they had 43 consecutive days in excess of 120F and yet didn't achieve 129F or more. Do you have any details of these 129F+ days?
