It took me a while to realize:
(1) The French people like Americans; unlike their government, they haven't forgotten us, and
(2) Many Americans have French blood and don't know it. Twelve hundred years ago, Norwegian Viking men started marrying French women and produced the Norman culture which invaded England in 1066 - and rules it to this day.
I actually wish I could speak French, but I'll settle for more practical Spanish.
