Drive from Scotty's Castle to Hwy 168

Is it advisible to drive from Scotty's castle to Hwy 168 through
one of the rough roads shown on the maps. I plan to drive
in a SUV ( not 4*4), to Eureka Dunes in first week of Oct
and then try the shortest route to Mono Lake.
How much should it take to reach Mono Lake from there.
