I am also from NY (originally; now I am on the left coast).
The first time I visited Death Valley was during the 4th of July
(during 130 temps in the valley, proper!) -
and it was love at first sight. I think I know where
you are coming from, being fascinated by the extreme.
I don't know the path of which you speak; I DO know there is
an insane way up to Telescope peak, but I think that
is from Hanupah canyon road, not Badwater. The only
sane way to get up Telescope Peak, is from the trailhead
at Mahagony Flat - or is it the other campground up there .. -
and THAT, is hard enough, and well worth the effort!
The extreme temps are fascianting, but you DO need to
be careful - hiking in the lower terrains in the summer is
risky business; don't doubt it. bring LOTS of water
if you do it, and don't go too far til you know what you
can handle!
