There was a reason that I didn't address whether our off roading was right or wrong - BECAUSE IT'S IMMATERIAL IN THIS DISCUSSION. Spiking tires is so far beyond the pale, that the reasons for doing it become moot. I mean, what if the same person spiked YOUR tires for even entering SV on the legal roads? You're bringing pollution in ... you're hiking around the desert... you're backing your car into a campsite... you're having campfires... The same freak who skiked our tires could have easily planted spikes on the main road to make their point. Come on, where does it end?
Don't fool yourself about the detour. The Inyo Co Roads Dept will need access to both sides of the washout, and they will be using the detour to drive heavy equipment for several weeks. It would have been much more environmentally responsible to establish and mark one single detour to keep folks from trying every track to see where it goes. This would have restricted the damage to where it was going to happen anyway.
Thanks for making your point with words instead of spikes, but your sympathy for vandals is grossly misguided...
