need advice: 3w cell phone booster...

Is anyone using a 3 watt booster to enhance reception and transmission of their .5 watt (standard) cell phone? I have the problem of being unable to use a cell phone for emergencies in certain parts of the desert. I was told that the solution was a 3 watt booster. But verizon does not offer them and Radio Shack says they are a waste of money. Before I spent the money it would be nice to know that they work. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks
