Just a suggestion, but you might want to camp out at Ballarat, get a good campfire going, and read Emmett Harder's "These Canyons are Full of Ghosts: The Last of the Death Valley Prospectors." Although not an eccentric himself, Emmett writes well about a whole slew of 'em. And he's a Mormon.
