everyone enjoys a campfire when there in the wilderness and people can tell you not to that it's an eyesore and it is the way most do with an ash pit and black chared rocks. But if you feel you must,do some things. DON'T use downed wood bring your own. make the fire small. Do not burn trash only wood. Burn the wood completely into ash. When the fire is out and make sure it's out spread the ash evenly through it to the wind and any rocks that were burned lay them burned side down on the ground. After all this it seems like a hastle huh so enjoy the stars and sit around a flashlight if you need light
