Yea...I knew the Growler. Typical of many desert individuals who seek solitude, he was lacking in social graces and violent when crossed. Not exactly the public relations type which is a necessity when running a business of colecting money from hotspringers. I never had a problem with him as my dealings with people are pretty direct with a liberal dose of mutual respect. I also knew a few old timers who lived out there in the 20s and 30s. They were old when I was young but the stories they told about the desert remain in my memeory. It was a long way to town back then. The desert has shrunk considerably with technology. I am curious about you also. Your knowlege of the Panamints seems like you've hiked it. It is a wild and mysterious land up there. Have you been up along that craggy ridge that is the backbone? Keynot canyon looked impassably steep from the Saline side. An entrance from the Owens Valley seems more like the way to go. I dont have a map and am relying on memory here. I also saw other mines and cabins from the air up there. One of the local Piutes told me that his family still hunts and gathers pinyon nuts up on that mountain in the summer/fall. Have you been up there recently?
