Here's what I've found; I've followed the technology curve on GPS units (Garmin must love me with all the $$ I've spent), however, you get what you pay for :-(

The Garmin GPS V+ is the best small GPS I've come across. Their S/W is ok for running the unit (Mapsource US Topo). More detail than you can handle with today's signals on the small display.

Maptech has the best S/W for really seeing where you've been (Not cheap). They give you real USGS topo's and aerial DOQs.
