Unfortunately I don't think there's any substitute for pixels. Do you use a photo editing software like Photoshop or Photosuite? I've had some good results with Photoshop. It can be a little tedious though. The other one I would suggest would be; believe it or not Microsoft Picture It. Something Microsoft got right for once, at least on the color/photo enhancement side. For some reason it does a really good job in that area. The rest of the program is just so so. If you have the time, I'd re-scan it (at the highest setting) then try to manipulate it with one of the above programs. The only other problem I could think of is that depending on your film speed, shooting through a 600mm lens with a high speed film, say 400 ASA or higher, it’s just going to be “grainy” the larger you go (again, pixel count).
