Jean and I were asked to edit Manly's book. We added 400 endnotes, a foreward, and an epilogue. The epilogue gives information on John Rogers that had not been known.
The press was originally going to use footnotes (they expected we would do 50 or so). The new edition also has an index—the first for the complete edition.
We drew several maps but the press only used one. Also we corrected all(we hope) of the typos in the original edition.
For scholarly work, we recommend the original edition from which to cite pages. Fortunately the original edition is available (photo-offset reproduction).
Trail buffs will find the Heyday edition helpful.
