No backcountry routes within Death Valley National Park are closed because of high temperatures. Titus Canyon is occasional closed for a few days at a time during the summer when the annual monsoons threaten the east side with heavy storms.

But Titus Canyon is an anomaly, in that it is the only backcountry route in the Park that is regularly maintained for the average passenger car, and it is arguably the heaviest travelled of the backcountry routes. As a result, this route attracts many visitors who are not prepared for backcountry survival in the usual summer flash flood.
