The Detroit Locker gives very positive traction, but it's probably too aggressive for your needs. You would do better to go with a limited slip differential. The limited slip acts like a normal differential until one of the wheels starts to slip. At this point, some power is transferred over to the other wheel. You will do much better in sand and slippery conditions. The limited slip uses clutch packs to engage, so it's much smoother than a locker.

If you have 4WD and you don't plan on climbing verticle rocks, you don't need to change differentials.

If your vehicle already goes everywhere you want to go, don't worry about it - the limited slip for my 2WD Dodge cost around $500 installed. Cheap insurance on the boat ramp, but not needed for hard pack trails.
