Fran,
Looks like you got a lot of great advice on this one. I was unclear if you actually have the new vehicle or if you are soon to buy the vehicle. If you do not yet have it, I would suggest stopping by the dealer and getting the info on the 03 Wrangler Rubicon TJ.

It will come with the sturdy Dana 44 axles, front and rear dash switch-activated air lockers, 31 inch Goodyear MT/Rs, 16-inch aluminum wheels that have a dished face to help protect them from off-road damage, 4 wheel disc brakes, heavy-guage diamond-plate rocker guards, the new 4:1 transfer case (great ratio). You will then have the engine option, I would go with the optional 4.0L inline six and then you get to choose between an automatic or manual.

So this is a great vehicle to start with and could actually do most trails with little if any modifications. I think it has already been covered, but you would possibly consider slightly larger tires eventually, a suspension lift, and then some of the other extras as time goes by. But out of the crate, from a vehicle standpoint, you are well on your way.
