As clearly stated by all the respondents who are experienced desert backcountry travelers: DO NOT DO IT BY YOURSELF!!! This isn't any attempt at being exclusive and surely not an attept to limit visitors, but just a friendly hint about your and your family's safety. When you get to DV, read the Death valley paper available all over the Park. Read the story of the German Tourist who thought he was a fit hiker and died within 5 hours of leaving Furnace Creek.
Please keep to the guided tours!! Do not leave the immediate area of the developed areas, and leave an itinery. I know this sounds over caustious. . .but you should very much be!! DD
