This from today's LA Times (7/15/02), Question: Sometimes when we change our baby's diaper, we see small, clear crystals on his bottom. What are they? Answer: They are crystals of a polymer called sodium polyacrylate, or "waterlock," that is used in disposable diapers to hold water. The polymer can trap as much as 800 times its own weight in distilled water....
There you have it desert trekkers---one pound of waterlock and you have 800 pounds of water, 96 gallons. A mere pound of sodium polyacrylate in your backpack and you have enough water for a refreshing shower and a foot soak at the end of the day. A cell phone, a Presto log and a pound of waterlock, can the desert get any better than that?
